Creation: Can we take Genesis seriously in a scientific age?
This Sunday as we dig into the first tough topic of our brand new series called God’s Book.
And we’re beginning right at the start in Genesis.
But before we even get there on Sunday, we’d love you to begin engaging with this topic during the week, if you want to go deeper and GROW in your reading of scripture and understanding of this amazing Book we have been given then this is a great place for you to start.
For many people, Genesis can be where our Bible confidence starts to wobble.
We’ve all heard the questions: Is science in conflict with faith? Did God really create the world? Can we really take Genesis seriously today?
Rather than avoiding those questions, we’re going to lean into them together.
Read Ahead This Week
If you’ve got a few moments this week, start here:
Genesis 1
Read it slowly. Notice what it tells you about God.
Genesis 2
What does this say about humanity and purpose?
Psalm 8
What stands out about how God sees human beings?
Psalm 19:1–4
What does creation itself reveal about God?
These are some of the key passages to consider.
Watch (Optional but helpful)
One of the BEST EVER resources to help you understand the bible is the "Bible Project". Its amazing and it has some of the best theology placed into some really easy to understand vidoes and blogs. If you want to go deeper with the bible then its the best place to start. These videos will help you this week.
Genesis 1 – BibleProject
A really helpful introduction to how the opening chapter of the Bible are meant to be read.
This video is a part of a bigger series of videos called "Creation". You will love them here is the link - https://bibleproject.com/videos/collections/creation/
Top tip: Watch each video a couple of times! There is a huge amount of content in each video, even though they are short.
🧠 A Lens for the Week
Here’s one idea to carry into Sunday:
Genesis is less about the “how”… and more about the “why.”
Science is brilliant at explaining processes.
But Genesis is revealing meaning, purpose, and identity.
So as you read this week, don’t get stuck trying to answer every scientific question. Genesis wont help you too much.
Instead, ask:
What does this show me about God?
What does this show me about humanity?
Why does this matter?
A Simple Starting Point
As you go through your week, try this:
Pause for a moment each day and notice something in the world around you.
Then simply say:
“God, thank You for this.”
Gods creation is a gift to us, and one of the ways we get to learn about Him.
This series isn’t just about understanding the Bible better.
It’s about encountering the God who speaks through it. Make sure you are formed by scripture not just informed.
One Question to Bring With You
If you could ask God one question about the universe… what would it be?
Bring that question with you on Sunday.
We’re really looking forward to starting this journey together.
This series is about growing in confidence with the Bible, not having all the answers, but learning how to read it well, wrestle honestly, and discover more of Jesus through it.
See you Sunday.
Blessings all.
Stephen
